Comparison of physical and biopsychosocial characteristics of Turkish speaking individuals from different cultures

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to compare physical and biopsychosocial characteristics
of individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia from different Turkish speaking
cultures.

Methods: A total of 120
patients with fibromyalgia,
sixty
patients from the Republic of Turkey and 60 patients from the Turkish Republic
of North Cyprus with the mean age 42.55
±8.30 year and 39.83±11.85 year, were included in the study. Physical status in daily living was assessed with the Health
Assessment Questionnaire, the biopsychosocial status was assessed with the
Short Form-36 and
the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach (BETY)-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire.

Results: Significant differences were found in BETY-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire
and the Health Assessment Questionnaire scales and the Short Form-36
subparameters including physical function, social function, general mental
health, emotional role limitation and overall health status between two groups (p<0.05).
The scores of individuals living in Republic of North Cyprus were better than
those living in Republic of Turkey.







Conclusion: As a result of the study, the
biopsychosocial characteristics related to disease in individuals diagnosed
with fibromyalgia were better on behalf of individuals from Republic of North
Cyprus in two different cultures whose native language is Turkish. The way of
living in an island and warm climate were thought to effect stress factors
positively in individuals from Republic of North Cyprus. It is suggested that
performing same comparisons with expanded patients who can not tolerate warm
weather with different diagnostic groups in future studies might be better to
draw a conclusion whether warm climate has a bad effect.

Fibromiyalji tanılı Türkçe konuşan farklı kültürlerden bireylerin fiziksel ve biyopsikososyal özelliklerinin karşılaştırılması

Abstract

Amaç:
Çalışmamızın amacı fibromiyalji tanısı almış ve anadili Türkçe olan farklı
kültürlerden bireylerin fiziksel ve biyopsikososyal özelliklerinin
karşılaştırılmasıdır.

Yöntem:
Çalışmaya yaş ortalaması sırasıyla 42,55
±
8,30 yıl ve 39,83
±11,85 yıl olan Türkiye
Cumhuriyeti’nden 60 ve Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti’nden 60 olmak üzere
toplamda 120 fibromiyalji tanılı birey dahil edildi. Günlük yaşamdaki fiziksel
durumunu belirlemek için Sağ
lık Değerlendirme Anketi, biyopsikososyal
durumun değerlendirmesi için Kısa Form-36 ve BETY-Biyopsikososyal Ölçeği
kullanıldı.

Bulgular: Bireylere
ait değişkenlerin karşılaştırmasında, Bilişsel Egzersiz Terapi Yaklaşımı (BETY)-Biyopsikososyal
Ölçeği ve Sağ
lık Değerlendirme
Anketi ile Kısa Form-36’nın fiziksel fonksiyon, sosyal fonksiyon, genel mental
sağlık, emosyonel rol limitasyonu ve genel sağlık durumu alt parametreleri
arasında anlamlı fark bulundu (p<0,05). Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti’nde
yaşayan bireylerin tüm skorları Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nde yaşayan bireylere
oranla daha iyiydi.







Sonuç:
Bu çalışma sonunda, anadili Türkçe olan iki farklı kültürdeki fibromiyalji
tanılı bireylerde hastalıkla ilişkili biyopsikososyal özelliklerin Kuzey Kıbrıs
Türk Cumhuriyeti’nden bireyler lehine farklı olduğu görüldü. Ada yaşantısının
ve sıcak iklimin Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti’nden bireylerde stres faktörlerini
olumlu yönde etkilemiş olabileceği düşünüldü. Hasta sayısının genişletilmesi ve
sıcak iklimin iyi gelmediği farklı tanı gruplarında da aynı karşılaştırmaların
yapılmasının çalışmanın veriminin arttıracağı görüşüne varıldı.
