Aim: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an intervention program developed for parents of presc-hool-aged children to reduce emotional neglect and emotional abuse.
Method: The study was conducted with 14 parents from a preschool in Istanbul, randomly assigned to experi-mental (n=7) and control (n=7) group. The experimental group participated in a 14-session intervention program. Prior to and following the intervention, all participants completed the “Emotional Abuse Potential Scale,” the “Recognition of Emotional Maltreatment Scale,” and the “Mother–Child Neglect Scale.” Parametric and non-parametric tests were used to analyze within- and between-group differences to evaluate the program's effective-ness.
Results: Results indicated no significant differences between the groups in pre-test scores across all measurement tools. In the experimental group, post-test scores on the “Causal” subscale were significantly lower, while post-test scores on the “Emotional Neglect” subscale were significantly higher than their respective pre-test scores, suggesting a decrease in neglect behaviors (higher scores indicate lower neglect). Furthermore, post-test scores on the “Causal,” “Recognition of Emotional Maltreatment,” and “Emotional Neglect” subscales in the experimental group differed significantly from those of the control group.
Conclusion: Findings suggest that the multidimensional intervention program effectively reduced parents' emo-tionally abusive causal behaviors and emotional neglect levels, while also enhancing their awareness of emotio-nal abuse. Considering the long-term impact of emotional neglect and abuse on mental health, the developed program provides a comprehensive and effective group-based model for professionals working in the field of mental health.
