Determination of Yield Performance Along with Morphological, Physiological and Quality Characteristics of Some Native Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) Genotypes

Abstract

This study was conducted in 2020 at the Research and Application Area of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ondokuz Mayıs University, in order to determine the yield performance together with the morphological, physiological, and quality characteristics of some native hemp genotypes. The experiment was established according to a randomized complete block design with three replications. The native lines used in the study were obtained by selection from populations collected from hemp growers in the provinces of Samsun, Amasya, and Kastamonu during 2013–2014. As plant material, 5 native hemp genotypes (Narlı-3, Narlı-7, Narlı-8, Narlı-12, and Narlı-14) and 2 foreign-origin cultivars (Santhica-27 and Futura-75) were used. In the study, traits such as flowering period, male and female plant ratio, technical stem length, stem thickness, thousand seed weight, dry stem yield per decare, and fiber yield per decare were investigated together with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) contents. The findings revealed that native hemp lines exhibited superior performance compared to foreign-origin cultivars in terms of technical stem length, stem and fiber yield, and thousand seed weight. Considering the THC limit of 0.2% and below accepted as the European Union standard in industrial hemp production, it is known that the foreign-origin cultivars used in the study comply with this standard. Similarly, it was determined that the THC content of all native lines evaluated in the study was below 0.2%. As a result, the native hemp genotypes examined within the scope of the research were found to be important genetic resources that can be utilized in industrial hemp breeding studies.
