Abstract

Ayşe Parla’s Precarious Hope: Migration and the Limits of Belonging in Turkey offers a profound exploration of migration, hope, and precarity through the experiences of post-1990 Bulgaristanlı migrants in Turkey. Framing hope as a collective and structural condition shaped by legal and economic systems, Parla situates her analysis within the anthropology of waiting, drawing on her immersive ethnographic engagement with migrants. She critically examines Turkey’s ethnic-based migration and citizenship policies, revealing how these frameworks simultaneously generate and limit hope. Parla highlights the paradox of Bulgaristanlı migrants’ perceived privilege as ethnic kin, juxtaposed with their precarious realities, especially during protracted struggles for citizenship.
