Dr. A. (Katerina) Varveri is an Associate Professor of Chemomechanics of Infrastructure Materials in the Engineering Structures Department at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology. She is Head of the Sections of Biobased Materials & Structures and Pavement Engineering.

Her research focuses on the interactions between environment, infrastructure materials, and structural performance. She investigates how chemo-rheological properties relate to the mechanical behavior of paving materials, and how these relationships evolve under complex environmental conditions such as moisture, oxidative ageing, and freeze–thaw cycles, ultimately affecting pavement durability. Her group combines advanced physicochemical characterization, multiscale modelling, chemometrics, and data-driven tools. In 2020, she received an NWO Talent Programme VENI grant for her work on sustainable paving materials.

Her work further explores bio-based and circular alternatives to conventional bitumen, aiming to design innovative binders compatible with recycled materials and low-temperature asphalt technologies, with a strong focus on long-term performance and reduced environmental impact.

Katerina is actively involved in international scientific networks. She served as FEHRL Research Coordinator for the Netherlands (2017–2024), was Secretary of the Academy of Pavement Science and Engineering (APSE, 2023–2025), and currently serves as Deputy Chair of RILEM TC 295-FBB and Steering Committee member of EATA. She is also Track Coordinator of the AM3P conference series on chemo-mechanical tools for performance-based pavement design.
