Trade Policy Shocks and Media Perception: United States Tariffs and Top 10 Container Port Operators

Abstract

A sentiment analysis of the 10 Top container port operators (TTCPO) is the focus of the study. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to measure sentiment changes associated with the announcement of tariffs. To facilitate the examination of the announcement’s coverage for the two separate periods, the announcement’s coverage was divided into two intervals, the periods before (March 28th, 2025 - April 10, 2025) and after (April 11, 2025 - April 25, 2025) the announcement. The changes with the most significance and the media coverage dynamics within the period after the announcement and before the announcement. The mention of the media coverage in social media was 88.04% and the mention of the media coverage with social media in a context of negativity increased by 35.61%. Also noted was a 15.80% increase in mention of the media coverage with social media in an overall positive context. Coverage of the social media was greater than the overall coverage by a factor of 132.06%. The prediction of sentiment concerning the major operators of maritime infrastructures was greatly influenced by the announcement of trading policies. Also noted is the fact that the increased coverage concerning the operators is not positive and this contradiction created a need for the major operators of the affected infrastructures to manage their reputation effectively.

Ticaret Politikası Şokları ve Medya Algısı: Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Gümrük Tarifeleri ve En Büyük 10 Konteyner Limanı İşletmecisi

Abstract

Çalışmanın odak noktası, en büyük 10 konteyner limanı operatörünün (TTCPO) duygu analizidir. Gümrük tarifelerinin açıklanmasıyla ilişkili duygu değişikliklerini ölçmek için yarı deneysel bir araştırma tasarımı kullanılmıştır. İki ayrı dönem için duyurunun kapsamının incelenmesini kolaylaştırmak amacıyla, duyurunun kapsamı iki aralığa bölünmüştür: duyurudan önceki dönem (28 Mart 2025 - 10 Nisan 2025) ve duyurudan sonraki dönem (11 Nisan 2025 - 25 Nisan 2025). En önemli değişiklikler ve duyurudan sonraki ve duyurudan önceki dönemdeki medya kapsamı dinamikleridir. Sosyal medyada medya kapsamına yapılan atıflar %88,04 oranında artarken, olumsuz bağlamda sosyal medyada yapılan atıflar %35,61 oranında artmıştır. Ayrıca, genel olarak olumlu bağlamda sosyal medyada yapılan atıfların %15,80 oranında arttığı da kaydedilmiştir. Sosyal medyada yer alan haberler, genel haberlerin %132,06 oranında üzerindeydi. Denizcilik altyapılarının başlıca işletmecileriyle ilgili duygu tahmini, ticaret politikalarının açıklanmasından büyük ölçüde etkilenmiştir. Ayrıca, işletmecilerle ilgili haberlerin artmasının olumlu olmadığı ve bu çelişkinin, etkilenen altyapıların başlıca işletmecilerinin itibarlarını etkili bir şekilde yönetme ihtiyacını doğurduğu da belirtilmelidir.
