Clastic Petrofacies and Sedimentology of The Karsantı Miocene Sandstones-Northern Adana (Turkey)

Abstract

Structural, textural and petrographical properties and paleocurrent directions of the Miocene Karsantı sandstones have been investigated within an area of 75 sq-km in the Karsantı region (N of Adana) by means of detailed sedimentological logging and sedimentary petrological studies. The geological age of the Karsantı Fonnation has also been determined by microfossil dating as Upper Miocene. On the basis of detailed geologic, micromineralogic and petrological studies. The sedimentation model and paleogeographical reconstraction of the Karsantı Formation in area investigated were reconstructed. As a result of these studies it has been postulated that the clastic sequence of the Karsantı Formation deposited in a shallow marine environment with two allocthonous coalbearing carbonate levels in the lower - middle and middle- upper levels which formed under lagunar and/or fluviatile conditions. Results of these sedimantary petrological studies revealed that detritus of the Karsantı arenites were derived from a northemly basic-ultrabasics rich provenance, i.a. Taurus ophiolitique Subduction Complex and Karsantı stratigraphic sequence postulated as an arctrench gap related sedimentary unit.

Karsantı Bölgesi (K Adana) Miyosen Kumtaşlarının Sedimantolojisi ve Klastik Petrofasiyesleri

Abstract

Karsantı Bölgesi'nde (Kuzey Adana) yeralan 75 km. karelik inceleme alanındaki Miyosen yaşlı kumtaşları, yörede yapılmış sedimantolojik kesitler vasıtasıyla ve sedimanter yapısal, dokusal ve petrografik açılardan incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma s ırasında yapılmış mikropaleontolojik etüdler sonucu Karsantı Formasyonu'nun yaşı, önceki araştırıcılardan farklı şekilde. Üst Miyosen olarak saptanmıştır. Bölgede yapılmış jeolojik, mikromineralojik ve petrolojik çalışmaların sonuçlarına dayanarak Karsantı Formasyonu'nun, incelenen bölge için geçerli, tortullaşma modeli ve paleocoğrafik evrimi saptanmıştır. Bu modele göre Karsantı Formasyonu otokton kumlu-çamurlu istifinin Sığ Denizel; alt-orta ve orta-üst kesimlerinde görülen yerel kömür içerikli allokton karbonatlı seviyelerin ise lagüner ve/veya fluvial ortamlarda çökeldiği kabul edilmiştir. İnceleme alanında yapılmış sedimanter petrolojik çalışmaların sonuçlan, Karsantı arenitleri detritik malzemesinin kuzeydeki bazik-ultrabazik kayaçlarca zengin bir provenanstan türediğini (Toros Ofiyolitik Yitilme Karmaşığı); diğer sedimantolojik veriler ise Karsantı stratigrafik istifinin yay-hendek bölgesi yakın çevresinde çökeldiği ihtimalini ortaya koymuştur.
