The Effect of Age and Gender in Terms of Socioeconomic Situation on the Selection of Implants with Different Prices; A Retrospective Study

Abstract

Objective: Since the first dental implant was osseointegrated into the jawbone, hundreds of implant brands have been available over the years. These implants, which have similar biological principles and surface technology, are on the market with different price scales, and in this way, patients with tooth loss can be treated by choosing the appropriate implant brand for their own economic situation. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effect of age and gender on the choice of implant brand in the socioeconomic situation. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 3749 patients who received implant treatment in the last 10 years in Inonu University Faculty of Dentistry were identified. Implant brands are grouped according to their prices as high, medium, and low prices. The patients were grouped according to their age (0-20,21-30,31-40,41-50,51-60,61-70,71-100) and their genders were divided according to each age group. The brands of the implants treated by all patient groups were determined, separated according to their prices and their numbers were determined. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the chi-square test. Results and Conclusion: The distribution of implant prices in the 0-20 and 21-30 age groups does not depend on gender (p values 0.439 and 0.083, respectively). In the 31-40 age group, 42.1% of women and 49.3% of men choose the high-priced one (p = 0.046). While men in the 41-50 age group mostly prefer high-priced implants, women in the 51-60 age group prefer high-priced implants (p <0.005). In the 61-70 age group, 43.2% of the women chose the high price, and 42.3% of the men chose the medium price. In the 71-100 age group, 50.7% of the women chose the high price, and 46.1% of the men chose the medium price. Since young people do not have economic authority within the family, it is thought that their brand choices are made in line with the financial power of their families. In the working-age group, men prefer the higher-priced brand, which may be since economic power is mostly men. Since people aged 50 and over, especially women, generally direct their economic power to them after their children join the working life, it is thought that the choice of implant brands can be medium and high priced.
