Investigation of Diffusion Kinetics of Boronized AISI 316 L Stainless Steel

Abstract

Due to the high corrosion resistance of stainless steels in general, AISI 316L stainless steel is used in various industrial sectors. In addition, it is used as an implant material in the medical field due to its high corrosion resistance and features such as biocompatibility. Although it has such good properties, its poor wear performance and low hardness limits the areas where this steel is used in the industry. Along with the advancement of technology, many coating methods have recently been brought up to change the surface properties of the materials. One of these coating methods is boronizing. Boronizing, which is a thermochemical diffusion process, is the process of diffusing boron atoms onto steel surface at high temperatures. Boronizing process provides properties such as low friction coefficient, high corrosion, surface hardness and wear resistance. AISI 316 L stainless steel is boronized at different temperatures (1073, 1123, 1173 K) and times (2, 4, 6 hours). Surface and phase properties of the coating layers obtained were made with the help of optical and XRD analysis. The hardness of the boronized AISI 316 L stainless steel was measured using the Knoop tip. Diffusion kinetics was calculated with the Arrhenius equation.

Borlanmış AISI 316 L Paslanmaz Çeliğin Difüzyon Kinetiğinin İncelenmesi

Öz

Paslanmaz çeliklerinin korozyon direncinin genel olarak yüksek olmasından dolayı, AISI 316L paslanmaz çeliği çeşitli endüstri sektörlerinde kullanılmaktadır. Bunun yanında, korozyon direncinin yüksek olması ve biouyumluluk gibi özelliklerinden dolayı tıp alanında da implant malzemesi olarak da kullanılmaktadır. Böyle iyi özellikleri olmasına rağmen zayıf aşınma performansı ve düşük sertlik taşıdığından endüstride bu çeliğin kullanıldığı alanları sınırlanmaktadır. Teknolojinin gelişmenin sağlanması ile beraber malzemelerin yüzey özelliklerinin değiştirilmesiyle ilgili son zamanlarda birçok kaplama yöntemleri gündeme gelmiştir. Bu kaplama yöntemlerinden bir tanesi de borlamadır. Termokimyasal bir difüzyon işlemi olan borlama, bor atomlarının yüksek sıcaklıkta çelik yüzey üzerine difüze edilmesi işlemidir. Borlama işlemiyle düşük sürtünme katsayısı, yüksek korozyon, yüzey sertliği ve aşınma direnci gibi özellikler elde edilir. AISI 316 L paslanmaz çeliğifarklı sıcaklık (1073, 1123, 1173 K) ve sürelerde (2, 4, 6 saat) borlanmıştır. Elde edilen kaplama tabakalarının yüzey ve faz özellikleri optik ve XRD analizi yardımıyla yapılmıştır. Borlanmış AISI 316 L paslanmaz çeliğin sertlikleri Knoop uç kulanılarak ölçülmüştür. Difüzyon kinetikleri ise Arrhenius denklemi ile hesaplanmıştır.
