Human Papilloma Virus and Vaccine Awareness and Knowledge Level of Midwifery
Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to determine midwifery students’ awareness and knowledge levels about human papilloma virus and its vaccine.
Method: The research is a descriptive cross-sectional type and was conducted at a state university in the south of Turkey between January 25 and March 25, 2023. The population of the research consisted of 340 midwifery department students. In the research, an attempt was made to reach the entire universe without selecting a sample and 331 students were included in the research. Research data were collected with the “Participant Information Form” and the Human Papillation Virus (HPV) Awareness and HPV Vaccine Information Thought Form, which were developed by the researchers by reviewing the relevant literature. The data obtained were shown as descriptive data, mean, standard deviation, number and percentage distributions using the SPSS 22.0 program.
Results: In this study, the average age of the students is 20.7±1.7 (min-max: 18-34), 24.2% of them are 1st grade, 24.2% are 2nd grade, 29.5% are i are in the 3rd grade and 14.5% are in the 4th grade. 85.8% of the students said they had heard of HPV before, 79.8% knew the way HPV was transmitted, 61.9% knew the difference between HPV and cervical cancer, 34% 8 of them stated that they should have a pap smear test every 3-5 years and 83.4% stated that HPV is a sexually transmitted infection .
Conclusion: In this study, it was found that the majority of the students had good knowledge about HPV and the HPV vaccine, but they lacked specific knowledge about the HPV vaccine.
