Protecting Adolescents Against HPV: International Vaccination Strategies and Public Health Implications

Year 2026, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 43 - 51, 28.01.2026

Abstract

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most important factor in the development of oropharyngeal, anogenital malignant and premalignant warts and cervix cancer in women. Transmission can occur through trauma to the skin or mucosa and with sexual intercourse. HPV infections can be prevented by vaccination and are included in vaccination programs in most countries as primary protection in adolescents. The countries that started HPV vaccination at the earliest in the world were the United States of America (USA), Switzerland, France and Monaco in 2006. Turkmenistan has the highest vaccination rate, which started the vaccination program in 2016. In this analysis Eswatini have the highest rates in cervix cancers and need to start vaccinations . Studies for adolescent health programs are continuing to initiate adolescent vaccination in Türkiye. In this review, the administration rates of HPV vaccines and the changes in HPV-related cancer rates by country in the world are examined.
