Fatherhood Scale and Father Involvement Scale: Adaptation to Turkish and Psychometric Analysis

Abstract

The literature on father involvement began in the 1970s with academic studies on fathers' levels of involvement in their children's lives, the developmental outcomes of this involvement, and the definition of fatherhood. Current literature is rapidly expanding with studies in many different research areas like psychology, education, sociology, and social work. Fatherhood and father involvement are culturally dependent concepts. Therefore, it is very important to have validated scales to make comparisons either in national or international levels. For this reason, the current study aims to present the adaptation process of Fatherhood Scale which is originally developed by Dick (2000) and Father Involvement Inventory originally developed by Hawkins et al (2002) into Turkish. Results of explanatory factor analysis yielded six factor structure for both scales in parallel with the original forms of scales. Reliability analysis indicated that the Cronbach alpha of Fatherhood Scale is .96 and it is .86 for Father Involvement Inventory.
