The Impact of Visualization Methods on Concept-Design Integration in Second-Year Interior Architecture Projects

Abstract

This article examines the critical role of visualization methods in the project process in second-year Interior Architecture design studios. It addresses how varios traditional and digital visualization techniques contribute to the process of conceptualizing, developing, and communicating design ideas. The study reveals the impact of the integration of visualization tools on students’ thinking, solution generation and communication skills. This study evaluates concept-design integrity in interior architecture education by analyzing the use of digitalization methods at different stages of the design process. This study, analyzed through the content of the Design Studio II and Presentation and Narration Methods courses, which are conducted as an integrated program at Başkent University during the Spring semester of 2024-2025, examines the impact of various visualization methods on the integration of conceptual ideas and practical design solutions in student projects. The analysis reveals that visualization serves as an important cognitive and communication bride by transforming abstract concepts into concrete realities and facilitating iterative design processes. In this context, it is emphasized that beyond technical proficiency, a problem-based and design-oriented pedagogical framework is needed for visualization to support conceptual and critical thinking. Suggestions are offered for curriculum development and integration across courses, studio instruction, and the use of technology to optimize concept-design integration. In conclusion, these recommendations aim to prepare students for a constantly evolving professional environment that requires adaptable visualization skills and a holistic approach to design, and to provide insights into effective teaching strategies that enhance design understanding and competence within the context of interior architecture education.

İkinci Sınıf İç Mimarlık Projelerinde Görselleştirme Yöntemlerinin Konsept-Tasarım Entegrasyonu Üzerindeki Etkisi

Abstract

Bu makale, ikinci sınıf İç Mimarlık tasarım stüdyolarında proje sürecinde görselleştirme yöntemlerinin kritik rolünü incelemektedir. Çalışma, çeşitli geleneksel ve dijital görselleştirme tekniklerinin tasarım fikirlerinin kavramsallaştırılması, geliştirilmesi ve iletişim sürecine nasıl katkıda bulunduğunu ele almaktadır. Bu anlamda, görselleştirme araçlarının entegrasyonunun öğrencilerin düşünme, çözüm üretme ve iletişim becerileri üzerindeki etkisini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışma, dijitalleşme yöntemlerinin tasarım sürecinin farklı aşamalarındaki kullanımını analiz ederek, iç mimarlık eğitiminde kavram-tasarım bütünlüğünü değerlendirmektedir. Başkent Üniversitesi 2024-2025 Bahar döneminde, birbirine entegre olarak yürütülen Tasarım Stüdyosu II ve Sunum ve Anlatım Yöntemleri dersleri kapsamında gerçekleştirilen içerikler üzerinden analiz edilen bu makale, öğrenci projelerinde kavramsal fikirlerin ve pratik tasarım çözümlerinin entegrasyonu üzerinde çeşitli görselleştirme yöntemlerinin etkisini incelemektedir. Analiz, görselleştirmenin soyut kavramları somut gerçeklere dönüştürülerek ve yinelemeli tasarım süreçlerini kolaylaştırarak önemli bir bilişsel ve iletişimsel köprü görevi gördüğünü ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bağlamda teknik yeterliliğin ötesinde, görselleştirmenin kavramsal ve eleştirel düşünmeyi desteklemesi için problem tabanlı ve tasarım odaklı pedagojik çerçeveye ihtiyaç duyulduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Konsept-tasarım entegrasyonunu optimize etmek için müfredat geliştirme ve dersler arasında entegrasyon kurma, stüdyo eğitimi ve teknoloji kullanımı konusunda öneriler sunulmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bu öneriler, öğrencileri uyarlanabilir görselleştirme becerileri ve tasarıma bütünsel bir yaklaşım gerektiren, sürekli gelişen profesyonel ortama hazırlamayı ve iç mimarlık eğitimi kapsamında, tasarım anlayışı ve yeterliliğini geliştiren etkili öğretim stratejileri hakkında içgörüler sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
