Prevalence, Severity, and Awareness of Temporomandibular Disorders in a Clinical Population: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the Fonseca Anamnestic Index

Abstract

Aim: Due to the limited data on the prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and patient awareness levels in clinical populations, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, severity, and awareness of TMD in individuals presenting to a faculty of dentistry using the Fonseca Anamnestic Questionnaire. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 341 individuals aged 18 years and older who presented to Batman University Faculty of Dentistry. The presence and severity of TMD were assessed using the Fonseca Anamnestic Questionnaire. In addition, participants’ awareness and healthcare-seeking behaviors were questioned. Chi-square, Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical analyses (p<0.05). Results: TMD was detected in 94.2% of the participants, most frequently at moderate (43.9%) and severe (30.0%) levels. No significant differences were found between genders in terms of TMD prevalence and severity (p>0.05). No significant relationship was identified between age and TMD severity. It was determined that a substantial proportion of participants were unaware of their symptoms and did not seek treatment. Individuals who were aware of their symptoms had significantly higher TMD severity (p = 0.04). Conclusion: TMD has a high prevalence in the clinical population, and awareness levels are low. These findings indicate the need to increase awareness and develop early diagnostic approaches.
