Three-Dimensional Virtual Reality in Prosthodontics: Current Applications, Educational and Clinical Perspectives

Abstract

Abstract Aim: To comprehensively evaluate the current applications of three-dimensional virtual reality (3D-VR) in prosthodontics and critically discuss its educational and clinical contributions, advantages, current limitations, and future perspectives based on the contemporary literature. Materials and Methods: A narrative review of the current literature was performed by critically examining peer-reviewed publications addressing the use of 3D-VR technologies in prosthodontics. The available evidence was synthesized with particular emphasis on preclinical tooth preparation training, fixed and removable prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, digital workflows, educational outcomes, and emerging technological developments. Results: The current literature indicates that 3D-VR provides a safe, standardized, and interactive learning environment that supports the acquisition of psychomotor skills, improves learning engagement, and facilitates objective performance assessment through real-time feedback and quantitative evaluation. Beyond preclinical education, virtual reality has shown promising applications in digital treatment planning, implant prosthodontics, and patient communication by enhancing three-dimensional visualization and clinical decision-making. Nevertheless, most available evidence originates from educational and simulation-based research, whereas well-designed clinical studies evaluating long-term clinical outcomes remain limited. Furthermore, substantial heterogeneity in simulation platforms, study designs, and outcome assessment methods restricts direct comparison of published findings. Conclusion: Three-dimensional virtual reality has become an important adjunctive technology in contemporary prosthodontics, offering meaningful benefits for education and selected clinical applications. However, the current evidence supports its use as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, conventional teaching and clinical practice. Future research should focus on standardized multicenter clinical studies with long-term follow-up to establish its educational effectiveness, clinical value, and cost-effectiveness, thereby facilitating its evidence-based integration into routine prosthodontic practice.
