Characteristics of Strategic Leadership in the Healthcare Sector

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the strategic leadership behaviors of managers working in hospitals and health institutions. In the study designed as a cross-sectional method in quantitative research methods, data were collected through a survey. The snowball sampling method reached 156 managers working in private and public hospitals and clinic-style health institutions in Istanbul between January and May 2023. The socio-demographic data form and the Strategic Leadership Scale were used as data collection tools. The highest perception scores of managers working in the health sector were in the ethical practices dimension of strategic leadership, and the lowest was in the political practices dimension. This result shows that the participants adopted the ethical leadership characteristics of transparency, accountability, impartiality, honesty and considering the institution's interests. The high mean score of strategic leadership behaviors (4.08±.218) indicates that managers demonstrate strategic leadership behaviors. It has been revealed that there is no significant difference in the dimensions of strategic leadership according to managers' variables such as gender, age, and education level. Health institution managers must be allowed to use their political leadership skills effectively within the scope of strategic management principles.

Sağlıkta Stratejik Liderlik Özellikleri

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, hastanelerde ve sağlık kuruluşlarında görev yapan yöneticilerin sergilemiş oldukları stratejik liderlik davranışlarını belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Nicel araştırma yöntemlerinde kesitsel olarak tasarlanan çalışmada, veriler anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. Kartopu örneklem yöntemi ile Ocak-Mayıs 2023 tarihlerinde İstanbul’da özel ve kamu hastaneleri ile klinik tarzı sağlık kuruluşlarında görev yapan 156 yöneticiye ulaşılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak sosyo-demografik veri formu ve Stratejik Liderlik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Sağlık sektöründe çalışan yöneticilerin etik liderlik alt boyutunda algı puanlarının yüksek olduğu, politik liderlik alt boyutunda ise en düşük olduğu görülmektedir. Bu sonuç, katılımcıların şeffaflık, hesap verebilirlik, tarafsızlık, dürüstlük ve kurum çıkarlarını gözeten etik liderlik özelliklerini benimsediklerini göstermektedir Stratejik liderlik davranışları puan ortalamasının (4,08±.218) yüksek olması yöneticilerin stratejik liderlik davranışlarını ortaya koyduklarını ifade etmektedir. Yöneticilerin cinsiyet, yaş, öğrenim durumu gibi değişkenlerine göre stratejik liderliğin boyutlarında anlamlı farklılığın olmadığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Sağlık kurumlarında yöneticilerin, stratejik yönetim ilkeleri kapsamında politik liderlik becerilerini etkin kullanma olanağı verilmesi önemlidir.
