Foreign Trade in the Shadow of Historical Tensions: Turkish-Greek Relations

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine whether the conflicts and diplomatic tensions between Türkiye and Greece, two countries that have historically experienced political crisis, affect the trade accrued between them. To this end, data on Türkiye’s exports to and imports from Greece for the period of 1950-2000, when relations were considerably tense, will be examined. Structural breaks in the export and import series during the period in question will be analysed with the Bai-Perron structural break test in order to determine whether these breaks coincide with the tension dates. The results show that the political crises apart from the Cyprus Peace Operation has not caused any change in Türkiye's exports. On the other hand, none of the political tensions seems to have an impact on imports series. These findings are consistent with the strand of the existing literature which claims no prominent impact from political events to economic relations in the cases of low trade volumes and economically small countries.

Tarihsel Gerginliklerin Gölgesinde Dış Ticaret: Türk-Yunan İlişkileri

Abstract

Bu çalışma tarihsel olarak siyasal anlamda kriz yaşayan iki ülke olan Türkiye ve Yunanistan arasındaki çatışma ve diplomatik gerginliklerin, iki ülke arasındaki ticareti etkileyip etkilemediğini incelemektedir. Bu amaçla ilişkilerin önemli ölçüde gergin olduğu 1950-2000 arası dönemde Türkiye’nin Yunanistan ile yaptığı ihracat ve ithalat verileri incelenecektir. İlgili dönemde yaşanan gerginliklerin ihracat ve ithalat serilerinde yapısal kırılma yaratıp yaratmadığı Bai-Perron yapısal kırılma testi ile analiz edilecek olup, kırılmaların bu gerginlik tarihleriyle örtüşüp örtüşmediği araştırılacaktır. Elde edilen sonuçlar Kıbrıs Barış Harekâtı dışında yaşanan siyasi krizlerin Türkiye’nin Yunanistan’dan yaptığı ihracata yansımadığını göstermiştir. Yunanistan’dan yapılan ithalat üzerinde ise herhangi bir siyasi krizin etkisi tespit edilmemiştir. Bu bulgu, iki ülke arasındaki ticaret hacminin oldukça düşük olması ve ülkelerin ekonomik olarak görece büyük olmaması ile açıklanabilir.
