Depression, Suicide, Help Seeking and Well-Being in Men

Abstract

The life expectancy of men in the whole world is shorter than that of women. Data related to gender and life expectancy in Turkey shows similarities with the World Health Organization (WHO)’s data. Masculine norms and the expression of depression, the high rate of suicide in men’s health are the major areas of concern for male when related to seeking help for mental health to maintain mental health. This article focuses on importance of language, emotional normalization, gender-sensitive interventions and nurses working with men need to demonstrate ‘male-positive’ values.

Erkeklerde Depresyon, İntihar, Yardım Arama ve İyi Oluş

Abstract

Tüm dünya da erkeklerin ortalama yaşam süresi kadınlara göre daha kısadır. Cinsiyet ve yaşam süresi ile ilgili Türkiye’de ki veriler, Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) verileri ile benzerlik göstermektedir. Erkeksi normlar ve depresyonun ifade ediliş biçimi, intihar oranlarının fazla olması, ruhsal sağlığın sürdürülmesi için yardım aramada erkek cinsiyetine özel önemli kaygı alanları arasında sayılabilir. Bu makale, dilin önemi, duyguları normalleştirme, cinsiyete duyarlı müdahaleler ve erkeklerle çalışan hemşirelerin 'erkek pozitif' değerler göstermesine odaklanmaktadır
