Abstract

The Impact of Local Residents' Perceptions of Destination Image and Place Attachment on Their Attitudes Towards Tourism Development

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1
https://doi.org/10.51525/johti.1598198

Abstract

The support of local residents plays a significant role in becoming a successful tourist destination. Therefore, understanding local residents' support for tourism is crucial for fostering this support. Destination image, which reflects the perceptions, thoughts, and beliefs about a destination, is expected to influence local residents' support for tourism. Similarly, the sense of belonging to a place impacts their attachment to that location. Therefore, local residents' perceptions of the destination's image and their attachment to it can determine their perspectives on tourism. In this context, this study investigates the impact of local residents' perceptions of destination image and place attachment on their attitudes toward tourism development in Alanya, Antalya. For this purpose, data were collected through a survey method, and an empirical study was conducted, with analyses performed using structural equation modeling. A variance-based (PLS-SEM) algorithm was used for structural equation modeling. Furthermore, the impact of destination image and place attachment on attitudes toward tourism development was examined. It was concluded that destination image and place attachment significantly influence support for tourism development, and place attachment plays a mediating role.
