Dijital Oyun Oynayan Sporcu Öğrencilerin Siber Zorbalığa Maruz Kalma Durumlarını Çözümlemek

Year 2025, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 19 - 35, 30.06.2025

Abstract

Analyzing Cases of Cyberbullying by Athletes Playing Digital Games

Year 2025, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 19 - 35, 30.06.2025

Abstract

Although technology provides countless benefits to humanity, it is known that it can be used by some to cause harm. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of cyber bullying on student athletes and the awareness of the participants themselves, their educators, and their parents. The study group consisted of 14 student athletes aged between 14 and 18, and the interviews lasted approximately 45 minutes. A semi-structured interview form was used as a tool in data collection. The data were evaluated with descriptive analysis. The findings were discussed as eight main themes. These themes; duration and time, permission, type of play, education, attitude, awareness, exposure, family. In the participants' comments, it was concluded that they saw cyber bullying as a problem, but this phenomenon was rarely discussed among themselves with educators or parents. Participants viewed cyber bullying as a serious problem, and some described online bullying as more serious than traditional bullying. Although some of the interactions are considered positive or neutral, it has been determined that cyber risks increase over time. Among the important results of the study are the feelings of sadness, anxiety and fear of the participants who were cyber bullied, as well as the decrease in their quality of life. As a result, it is thought that the study will contribute to the digital world and other communication technologies, as the age of use is getting younger and younger.
