Physician-nurse collaboration and affecting factors in family health centers: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to determine the level of collaboration between physicians and nurses working in family health centers in a province and to examine demographic and professional factors associated with collaborative attitudes. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 157 healthcare professionals (60 physicians and 97 nurses) working in 18 family health centers in Kırşehir, Turkiye. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a Personal Information Form and the Collaboration Between Physicians and Nurses in Primary Health-Care Teams Scale (CPN-PHCTS). Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Results: Physicians and nurses demonstrated similar levels of collaboration, with no significant difference in total CPN-PHCTS scores (p>0.05). Educational level significantly affected collaboration attitudes among nurses; high school graduates had higher collaboration scores compared with bachelor’s degree graduates (p<0.05). According to regression analysis, education level, work experience, profession, age, and having children significantly predicted collaboration scores (R²=0.167, p<0.05). Conclusion: Collaboration between physicians and nurses in primary care was found to be at a moderate level. Being a physician and having greater professional experience increased collaboration scores. Factors significantly associated with collaboration included education level, work experience, profession, age, and parental status. Results highlight the need to strengthen team based approaches and promote policies supporting interprofessional collaboration in primary care.
