Effect of vitamin D deficiency on uric acid/HDL cholesterol ratio

Abstract

Aims: It has been suggested that vitamin D deficiency is involved in the etiology of cardiovascular diseases. High uric acid and low HDL cholesterol levels are critical risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. High uric acid levels, high total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and low HDL-C levels are often encountered in cases with vitamin D deficiency. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and uric acid /HDL-C (UHR) and plasma atherogenic index (PAI, triglyceride /HDL-C) in patients with vitamin D deficiency.
Methods: This retrospective study included patients whose vitamin D levels were checked in our clinic. The subjects were divided into two groups according to their vitamin D levels and the relationship between laboratory variables, such as uric acid, HDL cholesterol, UHR, and plasma atherogenic index, was examined.
Results: A total of 675 patients, 167 (24.7%) males and 508 (75.3%) females, were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 53.6±15.2 years. It was found that patients with vitamin D deficiency had high UHR and PAI levels and low HDL-C levels (p=0.001, p=0.025; p=0.032, p=0.016).
Conclusion Our results suggest that vitamin D deficiency has a positive correlation with HDL cholesterol levels and an impact on the risk of cardiovascular diseases by increasing the uric acid/HDL ratio and plasma atherogenic index.

D vitamini eksikliğinin ürik asit/HDL-kolesterol oranı üzerine etkisi

Abstract

Giriş: Kalp damar hastalıklarının etiyolojisinde d vitamini eksikliğinin de yer aldığı öne sürülmektedir. Yüksek ürikasit düzeyi, düşük HDL-kolesterol düzeyleri kardiyovasküler hastalıklar için önemli birer risk faktördür. D vitamini eksikliğinde ürikasit yüksekliğine, total kolesterol, trigliserit seviyelerinde yüksekliğe ve düşük HDL-K düzeyi ile karşılaşılmaktadır. Biz de çalışmamızda d vitamini eksik olan hastaların D vitamini düzeyleri ile ürikasit /HDL-K(UHR) ve plazma aterojenik indeks (PAI, trigliserit/HDL-K) arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemeyi amaçladık.
Metod: Çalışmamız retrospektif bir çalışma olup kliniğimizde D vitamini düzeyi bakılan hastalar dahil edildi. Denekler D vitamini düzeylerine göre iki gruba ayrılarak ürik asit, HDL-kolesterol, UHR, plazma aterojenik indeks gibi laboratuvar değişkenleri ile arasındaki ilişki incelendi.
Sonuç: Çalışmada 167 (%24,7) erkek ve 508 (%75,3) kadın olmak üzere toplam 675 hasta dahil edildi. Hastaların yaş ortalaması 53,6±15,2 yıl idi. D vitamini eksik olan hastaların UHR ve PAI düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu, HDL-K düzeylerinin ise düşük olduğu görüldü (p=0,001, p=0,025; p=0,032, p=0,016).
Tartışma: Çalışmamız d vitamini eksikliğinin HDL-Kolesterol düzeyi ile pozitif bir korelasyon olduğu ürikasit /HDL oranını ve plazma aterojenik indeksi artırarak kardıyovasküler hastalık riskini üzerinde etkisi olduğu desteklemektedir.
