ENHANCING RESILIENCE: STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS ON VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

Abstract

The paper underscores the alarming acceleration of global warming, emphasizing the IPCC AR6 report's findings on escalating climate crises, intense weather events, and dire impacts on ecosystems and vulnerable populations. It highlights the urgency to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and explores potential solutions, including nature-based strategies and financial mechanisms like carbon markets. Despite substantial financial gaps, it discusses avenues to redirect investments, emphasizing the necessity for public signals to drive private sector alignment. Focusing on the socio-economic consequences, particularly in the southern and eastern Mediterranean, the paper stresses the amplification of poverty and vulnerability among the already marginalized due to climate change. Recommendations emphasize realistic pathways to mitigate these impacts despite financial constraints.
