Determining the Accuracy of Label Contents of Herbal Painkiller Products Sold in Pharmacies and Herbalists

Abstract

Abstract Aim: The aim of this study is to identify herbal products known for their analgesic effects and to evaluate the contents of these products sold through pharmacies and herbalists in Istanbul. Materials and methods: Initially, medicinal plants with pain-relieving properties were identified through a literature review, followed by a field study examining the sales forms, contents, and label information of these products. The findings revealed that herbal analgesic products are widely used among the public; however, there are significant differences between pharmacies and herbalists in terms of product content, packaging, and dosage information. Results: In total, seven herbal drugs used for analgesic purposes were examined. The regulation of these products and public awareness play a critical role in protecting public health. The research showed that herbal drugs obtained from herbalists often lack standard packaging and labeling, are not prepared according to a specific formulation, are stored in unhygienic conditions, and the information provided by herbalists does not match the actual product contents. In contrast, herbal drugs obtained from pharmacies are typically presented in labeled, sealed packages, with clear information on the label regarding the product’s composition and the specific plant parts used. Conclusion: It was found that there were significant discrepancies between the verbal information provided by herbalists and the actual product contents. While the product information provided by many herbalists was either insufficient or misleading, products obtained from pharmacies exhibited higher levels of information consistency and standardization of ingredients. This finding highlights the importance of the point of sale in terms of product reliability.

Ağrı Kesici Olarak Eczane ve Aktarlarda Satılan Bitkisel Ürünlerin Etiket İçeriklerinin Doğruluğunun Saptanması

Abstract

Özet Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, analjezik etkisiyle bilinen bitkisel ürünleri belirlemek ve İstanbul’daki eczane ile aktarlar aracılığıyla satışa sunulan bu ürünlerin içeriklerini değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmada öncelikle literatür taraması ile ağrı kesici özellikteki tıbbi bitkiler tespit edilmiş, ardından saha çalışmasıyla bu ürünlerin satış formları, içerikleri ve etiket bilgileri incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, bitkisel ağrı kesici ürünlerin halk arasında yaygın olarak kullanıldığını, ancak ürünlerin içerik, ambalaj ve dozaj bilgilerinin eczaneler ile aktarlar arasında belirgin farklılıklar gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Bulgular: Sonuç olarak, analjezik olarak kullanılan 7 tane bitkisel drog incelenmiştir. Ürünlerin denetimi ve toplumun bilinçlendirilmesi, halk sağlığının korunmasında kritik rol oynamaktadır. Yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda, aktarlardan temin edilen bitkisel drogların standart ambalaj ve etiket bilgilerinden yoksun olduğu, belli bir formülasyona göre hazırlanmadığı, hijyenik olmayan ortamlarda saklandığı ve aktarların verdiği bilgilerle ürün içeriklerinin örtüşmediği belirlenmiştir. Buna karşın, eczanelerden temin edilen bitkisel drogların etiketli ve genellikle poşet ambalajlar içerisinde sunulduğu, etiket üzerinde ürünün içeriği ile kullanılan bitki kısımlarına dair bilgilerin yer aldığı görülmüştür. Sonuç: Aktarlardan sağlanan sözlü bilgiler ile ürünlerin gerçek içerikleri arasında ciddi farklılıklar olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Birçok aktarda ürün hakkında verilen bilgilerin ya yetersiz ya da yanıltıcı olduğu gözlemlenirken, eczanelerden temin edilen ürünlerde bilgi tutarlılığı ve içerik standardizasyonunun daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Bu bulgu, ürün güvenilirliği açısından satış yerinin önemini vurgulamaktadır.
