Retrospective analysis of pathological and surgical results of parotidectomy cases in our clinic

Abstract

Salivary gland tumors are most commonly located in the parotid gland and and their treatment is parotidectomy. Tumors constitute the majority of parotidectomy indications, with recurrent parotitis and sialadenitis being other indications. The purpose of our study is to investigate the etiology, histopathological and surgical results of parotidectomy and the diagnostic power of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Patients who underwent parotidectomy at our clinic between August 2020 and December 2024 were included in our study. Patient demographics, reasons for surgery, MRI, FNAB and final pathology results and any complications were recorded retrospectively. Patients under the age of 18 and those with incomplete information were excluded from the study. A total of 42 patients with a mean age of 53 were included in our study. Sixteen of the patients had pleomorphic adenoma, 13 had Warthin’s tumor and 7 had malignant tumor. Complications were observed in 2 patients. The sensitivity of FNAB was calculated as 73.8%, while the sensitivity of MRI was 47.6%, and it was observed that the success of correct diagnosis did not differ according to age, side, and gender. It was observed that the accordance between MRI and FNAB was slight. In conclusion, our study revealed that parotidectomy is most often performed as a superficial parotidectomy for benign masses. The complication rates and sensitivity of FNAB rate in our case series were similar to those in the literature, but the sensitivity of MRI was lower than that of literature.

Kliniğimizdeki parotidektomi vakalarının patolojik ve cerrahi sonuçlarının retrospektif analizi

Abstract

Tükürük bezi tümörleri en sık parotis bezinde bulunur ve tedavisi parotidektomidir. Tümörler, parotidektomi endikasyonlarının çoğunluğunu oluştururken, tekrarlayan parotit ve siyaladenit diğer endikasyonlardır. Çalışmamızın amacı, parotidektominin etiyolojisini, histopatolojik ve cerrahi sonuçlarını, manyetik rezonans görüntülemesinin (MRG) ve ince iğne aspirasyon biyopsisinin (İİAB) tanısal gücünü araştırmaktır. Ağustos 2020 ile Aralık 2024 tarihleri arasında kliniğimizde parotidektomi operasyonu yapılan hastalar çalışmamıza dahil edildi. Hastalara ait demografik bilgileri, ameliyat nedenleri, MRG, İİAB ve nihai patoloji sonuçları ve varsa herhangi bir komplikasyon retrospektif olarak kaydedildi. 18 yaşın altındaki hastalar ve eksik bilgiye sahip olan hastalar çalışmadan çıkarıldı. Çalışmamıza ortalama yaşı 53 olan toplam 42 hasta dahil edildi. Hastaların 16'sında pleomorfik adenom, 13'ünde Warthin tümörü ve 7'sinde malign tümör vardı. 2 hastada komplikasyon gözlendi. İİAB duyarlılığı %73,8, MRG duyarlılığı ise %47,6 olarak hesaplandı ve doğru tanı başarısının yaş, taraf ve cinsiyete göre farklılık göstermediği gözlemlendi. MRG ve İİAB arasındaki uyumun düşük olduğu görüldü. Çalışmamız, parotidektominin benign kitleler için en sık yüzeyel parotidektomi olarak yapıldığını ortaya koydu. Vaka serimizdeki komplikasyon oranları ve İİAB duyarlılık oranı literatürdekilerle benzerdi, ancak MRG duyarlılığı literatürdekinden daha düşüktü.

The Journal of Surgical Arts (JSurgArts) is a continuously published, double-blind peer-reviewed journal. The aim of the Journal of Surgical Arts is to publish high-quality research articles, review articles on current issues, and rare case reports in the field of surgery. In addition, expert opinions, letters to the editor, scientific letters, and articles on surgical techniques are also accepted for publication, and various articles in the fields of medical and surgical history, ethics, surgical education, and forensic medicine are also included in the journal.

Each submission will be reviewed by at least two external, independent reviewers who are experts in their fields to ensure an impartial evaluation process. The editorial board will invite an external and independent reviewer to manage the evaluation processes of articles submitted by the editors or members of the editorial board. The Editor-in-Chief is the final authority in the decision-making process for all submissions.

Submission of an article requires that: the work has not been previously published (except for an abstract or a published conference, review, or dissertation piece); it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; Publication in the Journal of Surgical Arts requires the approval of all co-authors. The author(s) transfer copyright to the Journal of Surgical Arts, effective upon acceptance of the article for publication. The author(s) guarantee that the article will not be published elsewhere in another language without the permission of the journal.

Articles must be submitted in English. All submissions are first reviewed by the editor and then sent to reviewers. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Title page; The manuscript title, article type (clinical study, review, case study, etc…), author names (E mails, institutions, ORCID numbers), author contact information (name, E mail address, and phone number), and a short article title (> 50 words) must be included and uploaded to the Dergipark system during the submission process. If the article was presented at a conference, this should be indicated along with the name, date, and location of the conference.

Articles should include the following sections: Abstract (English abstract only for articles from outside Türkiye), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, Tables, and Figure Captions. Articles should have double spacing with sufficient margins on both sides. The font size (12 point) and style (Times New Roman) of the main text should be consistent. All pages of the main text should be numbered consecutively. Abstract: The abstract should be structured and serve as an informative guide to the methods and results sections of the study. Abstracts should not exceed 400 words. Abstracts should be prepared as paragraphs containing subheadings (Background-Aim, Methods, Discussion, and Results). Abstracts should not be included in case reports or letters to the editor.

References should be numbered in the order they appear in the text (Vancouver style). There is no limit on the number of references. All reference figures in the text should be given in parentheses without changing the font size. References should only include published or accepted-for-publication articles. The reference format should conform to the “Uniform Requirements for Submissions to Biomedical Journals” and its updated versions (February 2006). Journal titles should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus. Page numbers should be indicated in journal references. If there are six or fewer authors, all authors should be listed; otherwise, the first six authors and “et al.” should be written. The style and punctuation of references should conform to the following formats (examples for Vancouver style):

Figures, illustrations, and tables: All figures and tables should be numbered according to their order of appearance in the text. The desired position of figures and tables should be indicated in the text. Explanations should be provided in the relevant section of the main text, and magnification and dye used should be specified for photomicrographs and slide preparations. Color images and figures will be published if necessary and provided the authors are prepared to cover the costs. Illustrations should be professionally prepared. For recognizable photographs, signed consent from the patient or their legal representatives should be included; otherwise, the patient's name or eyes should be obscured to prevent identification.

Cover letter: Should include the title of the article and the name of the journal. The cover letter should also include a brief statement that "the article has been read and approved by all authors and has not been submitted to or is under consideration for publication in another journal."

Review articles; should include the title, abstract, text, and bibliography sections. As mentioned above, additional tables, graphs, and figures should also be prepared.

Case reports; A limited number of case reports are published in each issue of the journal. The presented case(s) should be educational, engaging for readers, and reflect a rare situation. Case reports should include sections for title, abstract, case, discussion, and bibliography. These reports may have a maximum of 6 authors.

Letters to the Editor; The letter should clearly state the title of the publication in which the opinions were published, the authors, the publication date, issue number, and page numbers. Editors do not issue acceptance certificates for "letters to the editor" as original articles.
