ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE OF ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII ISOLATED FROM CLINICAL SAMPLES

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from clinical samples since the identification of members of the genus Acinetobacter as nosocomial pathogens has accumulated a lot of knowledge. The clinical isolates were generally susceptible to antimicrobial agents in the first invitro studies, it is relatively easier to treat disease organisms could be formed. However, consecutive studies have shown that increasing rates of resistance in clinical isolates. In particular, A. baumannii complex is resistant to antimicrobial agents commonly used today. In this study we aimed determination of antimicrobial resistance pattern of hospital strains of Acinetobacter, empirical treatment and intended to be guiding the implementation of antibiotic usage policies. We conducted this study from January 2012 to January 2013 at Medical Microbiology Laboratories of Sakarya University Educational and Research Hospital. Samples from our laboratory breeding rates of antimicrobial resistance of A. baumannii isolates were investigated retrospectively. Samples were subculture to blood agar, eosin methylene blue agar (EMB) and chocolate agar. Following the work of identification and antibiotic susceptibility studies with conventional culture Vitek2 (bioMerieux, France) automated system was used. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were done according to the recommendations of Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). In our study, 212 A. baumannii isolates distribution rate according to the sample type were found 102 (48,1%), 32 (15,1%), 30 (14,2%), 22 (10,4%) and 14 (6.6%) in tracheal aspirates, blood, urine, wound and sputum respectively. A. baumannii isolates, isolated from urine samples, were shown statistical significant low resistance (p<0,05). In contrast to previous studies in our study examined the connection between the sample type and anti- biotic resistance and urine samples that were found to be more sensitive to antibiotics. We believe that this results will be helpful for expand range of views in subsequent studies.
