The Effect of Mental Training on Throwing Performance in Competition Period in Well-trained Dart Athletes

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of mental training on throwing performance during competition period in well-trained dart players. A total of 20 athletes (age: 21.20±2.34 years, body weight: 67.42±8.62 kg, height: 169.86 cm) aged 18 and over, playing at an elite level, participated in the study. The Control and Domination Test (CDT), Double Game Completion Test (DGCT), Game Completion Rate Test (GCRT), and Audience Pressured Victory Test (APVT) were administered as pre-tests and post-tests. Each participant took all four tests in the same visit on the same day, with a 5-minute break between. Within-group and between-group differences and the group*time interaction effect were examined using the “Mix ANOVA” test; the differences between pre-test and post-tests were also verified using the “independent sample t-test”, and the within-group pre-test-post-test comparison was verified using the “paired sample t-test”. According to the study results; in control and domination test performance (CDT), the experimental group experienced 9.90% decrease (p<0.05; ES=0.891, moderate), the group*time interaction changed significantly (p<0.05; F=24.293; ES: 0.525). In double game completion test (DGCT), the experimental group experienced 31.34% increase (p<0.05; ES=0.899, moderate), the group*time interaction changed significantly (p<0.05 F=21.522; ES: 0.495). In the 501 game completion rate test performance (GCRT), there was an 11.55% increase in the experimental group (p<0.05; ES=0.610, moderate), the group*time interaction changed significantly (p<0.05 F=18.75 ES: 0.460). In the audience pressured victory test (APVT) performance, the experimental group experienced %48.61 significantly increased (p<0.05; ES=1.155, moderate), the group*time interaction changed significantly (p<0.05; F=5.254 ES: 0.193). After mental training, control and domination performance in the single zone decreased; but the number of successful shots in the double zone, the game completion rate (501) and the audience pressured victory performance improved. Mental training has a positive effect on accurate dart-throwing performance, control, successful shooting and concentration during competition periods in dart players.
