Cognitive Behavioral Physical Activity as a Predictor of Job Performance: A Study on Public Sector Employees

Abstract

Background: The extent to which cognitive behavioral physical activity predicts job performance has not been thoroughly investigated within public sector employee samples. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of the cognitive behavioral physical activity (CBPA) components outcome expectancy, self-regulation, and personal barriers on two dimensions of job performance, namely task performance and contextual performance, among public employees. Method: The research was conducted using a relational survey design, and the sample consisted of public employees actively working in the Eastern Anatolia region. Data were collected from 891 participants through convenience sampling, ensuring adequate statistical power. Data were obtained via an online questionnaire that included a personal information form developed by the researchers, the Cognitive Behavioral Physical Activity Scale originally developed by Schembre et al. (2015) and adapted to Turkish with validity and reliability analyses by Eskiler, Küçükibiş, Gülle, and Soyer (2016), and the Job Performance Scale developed by Çalışkan and Köroğlu (2022). Analyses were conducted using SPSS and AMOS. The measurement model was tested through confirmatory factor analysis, and the reliability indicators (Cronbach’s α, McDonald’s ω, CR) and convergent validity indices (AVE) were confirmed to meet acceptable thresholds. According to the structural equation modeling results, outcome expectancy positively and significantly predicted both task and contextual performance, whereas personal barriers had a negative and significant effect on task performance. In contrast, the direct effects of self-regulation on both performance dimensions were not statistically significant. Result: These findings suggest that perceived benefits of physical activity enhance task execution and organizational contribution behaviors, while perceived barriers particularly weaken role fulfillment. Conclusion: The workplace programs that encourage physical activity, reduce access barriers, and make outcome expectancy more salient within goal-setting and feedback processes may contribute to improved performance outcomes in the public sector. Future studies are recommended to extend the model using longitudinal or quasi-experimental designs and multi-source performance indicators.
