Quiet Quitting: Literature Review

Abstract

Quiet quitting is one of the popular concepts that has emerged in the context of recent events taking place in the world. This behavior, carried out by employees, is seen as a response to current working conditions. In its simplest form, behaviors such as not doing more than what is required by the job, being passive and staying behind can be defined as quiet quitting. Although these behavior patterns are not newly discovered phenomena, when considered together, they reveal a meaningful structure that can be explained and defined. The reason behind labeling this behavior as "quiet" is the fact that individuals who exhibit this behavior have shown similar behavior patterns without being aware of each other. These reactive behaviors displayed by employees have become a phenomenon discussed worldwide, much like an underlying tidal wave that arrives quietly. There are two factors that contribute to the understanding and recognition of quiet quitting by the working masses. The first of these is the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, the compulsory and rapid changes in working conditions have had an accelerating and triggering effect on the behaviors carried out as part of quiet quitting. The other factor is social media. Through viral videos on social media platforms, individuals in similar situations who could not define their current situation and emotions have reached a point of awareness. The changing conditions of contemporary life and work have created a conducive environment for reactive employee behaviors such as quiet quitting. Therefore, individuals need to be constantly conscious and prepared to enhance their quality of life in the face of challenges. This study aims to examine the literature on the quiet quitting concept and to present the current situation.

Sessiz İstifa: Literatür İncelemesi

Abstract

Sessiz istifa, son birkaç yılın önemli gelişmeleri neticesinde ortaya çıkan popüler kavramlardan birisidir. Çalışmanın ana problemi sessiz istifa hareketinin doğru şekilde anlaşılmasıdır. Kavramın ele alındığı bilimsel çalışmalar ve popüler süreli yayınlar incelenerek mevcut durumun ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır. Çalışanlar tarafından gerçekleştirilen sessiz istifa davranışı, çalışma koşullarına bir tepki olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Dolayısıyla sessiz istifa günümüzdeki ve gelecekteki çalışan davranışlarının ve hareketlerinin bir örneği olması bakımından önemlidir. Mevcut literatürden elde edilen bulgular çerçevesinde sessiz istifa, görevin gerektirdiğinden fazlasını yapmama, pasif kalma, geride durma davranışları olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu davranış kalıpları yeni keşfedilmiş olgular olmamakla birlikte beraber ele alındıklarında açıklanabilir, tanımlanabilir anlamlı bir yapı ortaya çıkarmaktadırlar. Kavramın sessiz olarak nitelendirilmesinin ardında ise bu davranışı gerçekleştiren bireylerin birbirinden habersiz olarak benzer davranış kalıplarını göstermiş olmaları yer almaktadır. Çalışanlarca gösterilen bu tepkisel davranışlar sessizce gelen dip dalgası gibi tüm dünyada konusu edilen bir fenomen haline dönüşmüştür. Mevcut literatürün desteklediği gibi sessiz istifanın çalışan kitlelerince anlaşılır ve bilinir hale gelmesinde iki etmenin ön plana çıktığı görülmektedir. Bunlardan ilki Covid-19 salgın sürecidir. Bu süreç içerisinde çalışma koşullarında yaşanan zorunlu ve hızlı değişimler bireylerin sessiz istifa kapsamında gerçekleştirdikleri davranışlar üzerinde hızlandırıcı ve tetikleyici bir etkiye sebep olmuştur. Diğer etmen ise sosyal medyadır. Sosyal medya ağlarında viral olan videolar sayesinde benzer durumda olup içinde bulundukları durumu ve hissiyatı tanımlayamayan bireylerin bir farkındalık noktasına ulaşması söz konusu olmuştur. Günümüzün değişen yaşam ve çalışma koşulları sessiz istifa gibi tepkisel çalışan davranışının ortaya çıkmasında oldukça elverişli bir ortam yaratmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bireylerin yaşam kalitelerini arttırmak için zorluklar karşısında her daim bilinçli ve hazır olmaları gerekmektedir.

The journal is published twice a year, in June and December. No fees are charged for publications, no fees are paid to the editors, the editorial board and the referees and their owners. It is accepted that the authors who submit articles to the contact address for publication in the journal should read and acknowledge this copyright statement.

“Journal of Social and Cultural Studies” is open to the work of all researchers who have the title “PhD” or “PhD student”. It is not obligatory that the second, third and fourth authors of the article have the title “PhD” or “PhD student”. An article should has been written by max. four authors. The articles prepared in accordance with the writing rules are presented to the referee for review after they have passed the editorial review. The reviewer may ask for a correction to the article, directly refuse or accept it. For the articles declined as a result of the reviewer evaluation, a second reviewer may be requested by the author, If the editors’ board finds that the request is appropriate, the article will be sent to a second reviewer.

The articles previously published in another publication or in the evaluation stage by another publication are not accepted into “Journal of Social and Cultural Studies” publication process. All the ethical and legal responsibilities related to the published articles belong to the authors.
