Human needs are supplied from underground resources by mining activities. In the process of these activities, receiving environments such as water, air and soil can be affected. Today, these processes can be managed and environmentally friendly mining can be done with a proactive approach.
In this study, the environmental effects of the schists of a coal washing plant belonging to a coal company in the Kütahya-Tavşanlı region were investigated specifically for acid mine drainage. In this context, kinetic tests were applied to the samples taken from the field, following the sample preparation procedures. In the kinetic column tests, columns designed in different lengths and diameters designed according to the standards were also carried out. Variable parameters such as particle size, column diameter, bacteria (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) amount were investigated in kinetic column tests. At the end of systematic tests in which different parameters were investigated, the time dependent pH, Eh(mV), Conductivity/Ec (mS/cm) values of the filtrates obtained from the columns and the metal and anion contents of the samples were determined by making a homogeneous mixture of the total filtrates.
When the results were evaluated in general, it was determined that the samples containing around 1% S-2 would not produce AMD due to the high pH levels observed during the study period due to the high neutralization potential host rock at the end of the kinetic tests.
