Intelligentsia in Turkey have analogous understanding on religion and religious issues. Conservative, leftist, nationalist and other intellectuals, irrespective of their political posture on religion and its appearance in public life, they fundamentally share common ideas in this regard. Ali Fuad Başgil is among the conservative intellectuals who made some initiatives on higher education and religious institutions. In this paper his ideas on religion and religious institutions will be dealt with comparatively with those of Erol Güngör. Although they share the same world view, they differ on these matters, which is the prototype of what we are experiencing today. So their discussions and proposals have vital importance for nowadays and future projections.
