Abstract

Scientific tafsīr has a long history that goes back to al-Ghazalī and Razī. Early scholars and Muslim philosophers used their cumulative knowledge in order to understand and clarify the Qur’an. These studies could be regarded as the first examples of scientific explanations in the present day. However, the divergence of the Muslim world form science has led to the rupture of scientific studies. As a result of the development in modern science in recent times, some interpreters have again started to make logical and scientific comments on the verses of the Qur’an. Unfortunately, this labor is being evaluated as unnecessary and ridiculous by other Islamic environment. We have emphasized that we are also against the extreme scientific remarks on Qur’an. On the other hand, we have tried to indicate the necessity of this methodology through some of our works. In conclusion, we can clearly see that scientific tafsīr is essential when some of the verses and statements of Qur’an have been examined
