The Use of Brutalism Architectural Syle in Graphic Design

Öz

Generally associated with architecture, brutalism is a visual art style that has also been embraced by painters, sculptors, photographers, and designers. Emerging as a continuation of the modern architecture movement at the end of World War II, the brutalism movement became very popular in a short period between 1950-1980 and iconic architectural works of this movement were built all over the world. Although the philosophy and architectural features of brutalism were met with great interest and associated with the future in its own time, it was subjected to intense criticism in the 80s and even many brutalist government buildings were demolished. The most important reasons for the end of this architectural trend are the policy changes of governments and the fact that buildings do not age well. Architecturally, the number of buildings built with this concept today is almost negligible Today, the massive structures of brutalist architecture, which fascinate and defy their time, have inspired other art forms. Inspired by Brutalism's use of geometric forms and raw materials, it is possible to see furniture, kitchen utensils made of concrete, useful objects, modular sculptures and graphic designs in our daily lives. Especially brutalist website designs have become increasingly popular. Although the features of brutalist design such as the display of materials, simple colour palette, being free of ornaments, modular and repeated design elements, monumentality have been systematized as certain principles, the biggest challenge faced by the movement in the field of design is that the application of these design principles varies not only from designer to designer but also from environment to environment. In almost all branches of visual arts, works created by adopting the design elements of the brutalist movement are still welcomed with interest today. For this reason, in this study, the history, philosophy and design features of brutalism were tried to be explained together with examples of graphic design today, and two posters were designed based on Brutalist design elements.

MİMARİ BİR AKIM OLAN BRÜTALİZMİN GRAFİK TASARIM ALANINDA KULLANIMI

Öz

Genel anlamda mimariyle ilişkilendirilen brütalizm; ressamlar, heykeltraşlar, fotografçılar ve tasarımcılar tarafından da benimsenen bir görsel sanat tarzıdır. II. Dünya Savaşı’nın sonunda modern mimari hareketinin bir devamı olarak ortaya çıkan brütalizm akımı, 1950-1980 yıllarında kısa sayılabilecek bir dönemde oldukça popüler hale gelmiş ve dünyanın dört bir yanında bu akımın ikonik mimari eserleri inşa edilmiştir. Brütalizm felsefesi ve mimari özellikleri kendi döneminde oldukça ilgiyle karşılanmış ve gelecekle ilişkilendirilmiş olmasına rağmen 80’li yıllara gelindiğinde yoğun eleştirilere maruz kalmış hatta birçok brütalist hükümet binası yıkılmaktan kurtulamamıştır. Bu mimari akımın son bulmasının en önemli nedenleri olarak hükümetlerin politika değişimleri ve binaların iyi yaşlanmaması gösterilmektedir. Mimari anlamda günümüzde bu anlayışla inşa edilen bina sayısı parmakla sayılabilecek kadar azdır. Günümüzde brütalist mimarinin görenleri kendine hayran bırakan ve dönemine meydan okuyan devasa yapıları, başka sanat dallarına ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Brütalizmin geometrik formları ve ham malzemeyi kullanmasından ilham alan mobilyalar, beton malzemeyle yapılmış mutfak araç gereçleri, kullanışlı objeler, modüler heykeller ve grafik tasarımları günlük hayatımızda görmek mümkündür. Özellikle brütalist web sitesi tasarımları, giderek daha popüler hale gelmeye başlamıştır. Brütalist tasarımın malzemelerin sergilenmesi, sade renk paleti, süslemelerden arındırılmış olmak, modüler ve tekrarlanan tasarım öğeleri, anıtsallık gibi özellikleri belirli ilkeler halinde sistemleştirilmiş olmasına rağmen akımının tasarım alanında karşılaştığı en büyük zorluk, bu tasarım ilkelerinin uygulanışının yalnızca tasarımcıdan tasarımcıya değil, ortamdan ortama da değişiklik göstermesidir. Görsel sanatların hemen hemen bütün dallarında brütalist akımın tasarım öğeleri benimsenerek oluşturulmuş eserler günümüzde de ilgiyle karşılanmaktadır. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada brütalizmin tarihi, felsefesi ve tasarım özellikleri, günümüzdeki grafik tasarım örnekleriyle birlikte açıklanmaya çalışılmış, Brütalist tasarım öğelerinden yola çıkılarak iki afiş tasarlanmıştır.
