The Planning and Management of Green Open Space System in University Campuses: Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus of Bartın University
Abstract
University campuses are some of the important constituents of urban green open space systems, which offer
important contributions to the landscapes of the cities where they are located. In this study, the green open space
system of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus of Bartın University is recommended to be arranged in line with the principles
of botanical garden planning and design. In the case of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus of Bartın University, the planning
and design works were evaluated in three stages. Academic studies and a landscaping Project in the nature of
implementation area for students were put forward as a sample space constituting the 1 st stage in line with the
principles of botanical garden planning and design, which is recommended to be spread throughout the campus. At
the same time, with intent to ensure effective management of the green open space of the campus, the cases in Turkey
and the World were investigated, and then the “Sustainable and Effective Green Campus Model” was recommended,
as a management model considered to be necessary and important. The article contains the (i) Description of the
Study Area, (ii) Characteristics of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus Area of Bartın University, (iii) Current uses and
requirement list of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus Area of Bartın University, (iv) Determination of the main decisions of
the Landscape Design Project, (v) Stages related to the problems encountered in the campus areas, management and
recommendations.
In this study, the green open space system and management of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus of Bartın University
was aimed to be at a level that constitutes a model for similar universities in the region, which have been newly
established and began to constitute their physical development in terms of plant species and other physical developments. By means of this study, Kutlubey-Yazıcılar Campus Area of Bartın University located in rural area
will be of importance in the future, as a part of the urban green open space system at the scale of Bartın’s urban
macroform.
