The Lyrical Self in Georgian Modernism: Modernist Solitude and Linguistic Experimentation in the Poetry of Galaktion Tabidze

Abstract

The question of how the modernist lyrical subject is constructed in the poetry of Galaktion Tabidze, one of the founding figures of Georgian modernism, has become an increasingly significant issue in recent scholarship. Tabidze’s poems “მთვრალი დღეები” (Drunken Days), “გამეფება ღამისა” (The Coronation of Night), and “წითელი ატმოსფერო” (Red Atmosphere) can be read through their fragmented imagery, fragile sensory atmospheres, and the materialization of language, all of which make visible the inner disintegration of the modern subject. Images of night, mist, and darkness that shape the inner collapse of the lyrical self, together with a linguistic structure in which words dissolve into particles and meaning drifts away from a stable center, reveal the multilayered aesthetic construction of modernist solitude. In Tabidze’s poetics, solitude expands beyond a personal emotional state into a cosmic mode of existence; night and darkness turn into metaphysical signs of the subject’s loss of position within the universe. At the same time, the disintegration of language appears as a direct reflection of the fracture in modernist consciousness: words no longer function as transparent vehicles of meaning but transform into sensory fragments that expose the shattered nature of the subject. Tabidze’s modernism is shaped not only by European modernist aesthetics but also by the metaphysical and mystical sensibilities embedded in Georgian cultural consciousness, giving rise to a hybrid poetic structure. In this respect, Tabidze emerges as a distinctive modernist poet who reconstructs modernist solitude on both thematic and linguistic levels.

GÜRCÜ MODERNİZMİNDE LİRİK BİREY: GALAKTİON TABİDZE ŞİİRİNDE MODERNİST YALNIZLIK VE DİL DENEYLERİ

Abstract

Gürcü modernizminin kurucu figürlerinden Galaktion Tabidze’nin şiirinde modernist lirik öznenin nasıl inşa edildiği, şairin yalnızlık, melankoli ve dilsel çözülme temalarını nasıl poetik bir bütünlük içinde işlediği son yıllarda yeniden değerlendirilen önemli bir sorunsal hâline gelmiştir. Tabidze’nin “მთვრალი დღეები” (Sarhoş Günler), “გამეფება ღამისა” (Gecenin Taç Giymesi) ve “წითელი ატმოსფერო” (Kızıl Atmosfer) adlı şiirleri, modernist bireyin içsel parçalanmasını görünür kılan imgeler, kırılgan duyusal atmosferler ve maddeselleşmiş dil yapıları üzerinden okunabilir. Lirik öznenin içsel yıkımını temsil eden karanlık, sis ve gece imgeleri; kelimenin parçacıklara ayrıldığı ve anlamın sabit bir merkezden uzaklaştığı dilsel yapı ile birleşerek modernist yalnızlığın çok katmanlı bir estetik düzlemde kurulduğunu göstermektedir. Tabidze’nin poetikasında yalnızlık, bireysel bir duygulanımın ötesine geçerek kozmik bir varoluş hâline genişler; gece ve karanlık, öznenin evrendeki yerini kaybettiği metafizik bir boşluğun göstergesine dönüşür. Bununla birlikte dilin çözülmesi, modernist bilinçteki kırılmanın doğrudan yansımasıdır: kelimeler anlamı taşıyan araçlar olmaktan çıkarak duyusal kırıntılara dönüşür ve öznenin parçalanmış bilincini görünür hâle getirir. Tabidze’nin modernizmi yalnızca Avrupa modernist estetiklerinden beslenmez; Gürcü kültürel bilinçaltının mistik ve metafizik duyarlıklarıyla birleşerek melez bir poetik yapı oluşturur. Bu yönüyle şair, modernist yalnızlığı hem tematik hem de dilsel düzeyde yeniden kuran özgün bir modernist figür olarak öne çıkar.
