THE INVESTIGATION ONLINE INFORMATION SEARCH STRATEGIES OF GRADUATE STUDENTS IN TERMS OF VARIOUS VARIABLES
Abstract
Using internet is a difficult and complex process because it includes searching of different types of content when navigating. Therefore, it could be claimed that it is important to have basic knowledge about searching strategies in this complex system. Thus it is important to investigate cognitive and metacognitive strategies users need to have. The purpose of this study was to examine online information search strategies of graduate students in terms of gender, internet use experience, level of computer usage and the primary purpose of using computer and Internet variables.
Descriptive research method was used in this study. For data collection “Online Information Searching Strategy Inventory” was used. The inventory consists of 25 items with 3 domains and 7 subscales. The participants of the study are 227 graduate students from 36 different universities on the basis of voluntary answering in an online platform. Findings revealed that while there is a strong relationship between online information search strategies and variables like gender, the experience of using the internet and the level of computer usage, no relationship was found between online information search strategies and primary purpose of the computer and Internet usage. Based on the findings it is suggested that for future studies the relationship between online information search strategies and academic performance in terms of various variables such as college and department studied and education level are investigated.
