Küresel Salgın Sürecinde Sosyal Medyanın Habercilik Rolü: Yararlı mı? Zararlı mı? Kullanıcı Deneyimleri Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Year 2020, Issue: 5, 44 - 58, 24.12.2020

Abstract

The Reporting Role of Social Media in the Global Pandemic: Is It Useful? Is it Harmful? A Research on User Experiences

Year 2020, Issue: 5, 44 - 58, 24.12.2020

Abstract

The covid-19 epidemic, which affects the entire world, has shown itself to be a process experienced for many for the first time. In particular, the closure of university and many places where young people spend time due to quarantine and social isolation has forced them to spend time at home in this process. In this context, social media has functioned as one of the limited socialization and communication environments accessible. In a country like Turkey, where its young population spends quite high rates of time on social media, the pandemic process has made the use of social media even more interesting. Processes such as access, sharing, and exposure, especially in the context of journalism, have manifested themselves in more intensive and different forms. This study aims to reveal the functions of social media in the context of Journalism among young university students during the pandemic. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted online with university students. The reason for the preference for in-depth discussion as a method can be expressed as clearly revealing the different forms of Use and functions that occur in an extraordinary process. In this context, some of the research’s outstanding findings mention a number of negative effects such as avoidance, loss of trust, as well as positive effects such as information search, validation, and morale gain
