This paper, contains limited information on the dance culture of two exchange
communities who came from Kavala and Thessaloniki in Greece and placed around
the city of Samsun in Turkey by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. The most distinctive
property that differentiates the dances of the exchangees from Hacı Ismail and
Alaçam districts connected to Canik town from other local dances is the traditional
hora and karşılama type exchangee dances performed in weddings in
accompaniment of the davul and zurna. When we consider Samsun exchangee
dance performances from a formal point of view, a slow sequence towards fast
dances in terms of tempo (rhythm and speed in the structure of the figure) is seen.
At the same time, an increase in the tempo according to the dancers’ and musicians’
communication is seen in a dance. The traditional dance culture, which has been
kept alive by Samsun exchange societies, has contributed to the further enrichment
of local cultural treasure by adding diversity to the region's traditional dance culture.
