In this thesis, the effects of structural features on quality of musical sound were
investigated. In the project, 12 different heads were prepared for percussion. The
properties of the quality sound as a sound-wave were evaluated so as to investigate
the effects of mechanical and structural properties on sound. In order to obtain the
pure vibrations of skins, a Mechanical Streching Aparattus (MGD) was developed. By
using the microphone and accelerometer, sounds had been recorded from heads
that streched on MGD. By using computer software, the time-dependant changes
seen in the wave forms of the voice-recordings were subjected to two and three
dimensional researches in attack, sustain and decay processes. According to the
analysis, it is understood that the concord and the corelative ratios of the basic
harmonics and the frequencies of the regular progress and voices samples in the
signal graphics are an important factor for the sound quality. In this respect; it is
determined that the voice samples for the Heads no. 6., 5. and 7 are relatively well.
However, it is detected that the differences of the musical voice samples in respect
to quality properties are the result of the excessiveness of structurally vibrating
elements and this leads to some complicated vibes.
