Global Social Movements

Abstract

Global social movements that became an important issue in the global political agenda after the WTO protests at Seattle in 1999, seem to have achieved special success. The anti-globalization protests not only have caused a global doubt on the legitimacy of the transnational actors of globalization like WTO, IMF and WB, they have also put neoliberal globalization into question and provided people to think on the alternatives. This study focuses on the development of the global social movements and tries to analyze the point they have reached today. The study is examining the goals, the different styles of protests and actions, the character of the member groups and individuals, and also the organization process of the movements as well as its origins and development. The social forum organization that was constituted by the anti-globalization movement is an important turning point for the development of the movement but still there are unsolved problems needed to be overcome by the anti-globalization coalition. Especially the member groups need to reach a common view on the issues of strategy, organization style and political program in order to carry the movement to further steps.
