TATTOO AS A DISPLAY OF IDENTITY

Abstract

Tattoo is an application which has found life in our skin (our organ that has an important role in embodiment and displaying of our identities) much earlier fromthan the invention of writing and survived until today, as a way of displaying our identities both to ourselves as well as to others. It can be seen that the purposes and the meanings of tattoos have changed over time in parallel with the concept of identity in the history of mankind. Previously most of the tattoos were the symbols of commiting a group or a belief; but today it is observed that they often serve as to embody personal experiences, thoughts, feelings and desires. In this paper, it is aimed to examine tattoo as a display of identity, within the framework of the concepts of Psychosocial Development Theory and Social Identity Theory, and with examples from the history of tattooing

Kimlik ifadesi olarak dövme

Abstract

kimliğimizin şekillenmesi ve ifade bulmasında önemli rolü olan derimizde, yine kimliğimizi (hem kendimize, hem de başkalarına) ifade etmenin bir yolu olarak hayat bulmuş, bugüne kadar da varlığını sürdürmüş bir uygulamadır. Kimlik kavramının insanlık tarihindeki evrimine paralel olarak, dövmelerin de hem yapılış amaçları, hem de taşıdığı anlamların zaman içinde değiştiği görülmektedir. Önceleri çoğunlukla bir inanca olan bağlılığı ya da bir gruba olan aidiyeti simgeleyen dövmelerin, günümüzde daha çok kişisel yaşantılar, düşünce, duygu ve istekleri somutlaştırmaya hizmet ettiği görülmektedir. Bu yazıda bir kimlik ifadesi olarak dövme Psikososyal Gelişim Kuramı ve Sosyal Kimlik Kuramı kavramları çerçevesinde, dövme tarihinden örneklerle incelenmeye çalışılmıştır
