Abstract

Objective: In this study, commonness of depression, anxiety, stress and psychological support among medical students were searched. These variables were compared with sociodemographic variables and the relation between the risk factors and these variables was measured. Method: Total 348 students chosen by stratified sampling included the study between October 2012 and May 2013. All participants filled a sociodemographic survey and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42). The relationship between depression, anxiety, stress and psychological support status and possible risk factors and sociodemographic variables were searched. Results: In our sample, 169 (48,6%) and 179 (51,4%) of participants are male and female, respectively. Also, 41%, 45% and 40,4% of the participants were found having signs of depression, anxiety and stress, respectively. There is no significant difference between scores of males and females. Students being dissatisfied with friendships, worry about physical appearance or having economical distress have higher depression, anxiety and stress scores and whose relatives diagnosed psychiatrical have higher depression scores. Anxiety scores of who preferred medical career for vocational fulfillment and depression scores of who are in an emotional relationship are low. Females were found more eager to psychological support than males. Conclusion: Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress among medical students are common. The risk for these diseases seems increased including students having social and economic problems, being chosen medical career with outer effects and worrying about physical appearance. Although DASS-42 scores of males and females are similar, males are reluctant to psychological support. Subsequent follow-up and qualitative studies will give comprehensive information

Tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinde depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri ve ilişkili etmenler

Year 2013, Volume: 21 Issue: 1, 1 - 10, 01.06.2013

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, tıp öğrencilerinde
depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeylerinin
yaygınlığı araştırılmış, bu değişkenler çeşitli
sosyodemografik değişkenlerle karşılaştırılmış ve
risk etmenleri ile ilişkisi araştırılmıştır. Yöntem:
Ankara Üniversite Tıp Fakültesi (AÜTF)
öğrencilerinden Ekim 2012 – Mayıs 2013
tarihlerinde tabakalı örneklemeyle seçilen 348 kişi
alınmıştır. Katılımcılara sosyodemografik anket ve
Depresyon Anksiyete ve Stres Ölçeği (DASS-42)
uygulanmıştır. Depresyon, anksiyete, stres ve
psikiyatrik destek alma durumlarıyla
sosyodemografik değişkenler ve muhtemel risk
etmenleriyle ilişkisi araştırılmıştır. Bulgular:
Katılımcıların 169’u (%48,6) erkek, 179’u (%51,4)
kadındır. DASS-42 puanlarına göre %41’inde
depresyon, %45’inde anksiyete ve %40,4’ünde ise
stres belirtileri saptanmış, kadın ve erkekler
arasında fark saptanmamıştır. Arkadaşlıklarından
memnun olmayanlar, dış görünümünden endişeliler
veya ekonomik sıkıntı içindeki öğrencilerde
depresyon, anksiyete ve stres puanları;
akrabalarında psikiyatrik hastalığı olanlarda
depresyon puanları yüksektir. Mesleki tatmin için tıp
fakültesini tercih edenlerin depresyon ve anksiyete
puanları, duygusal ilişkisi olanların depresyon
puanları düşüktür. Kadınların psikolojik desteğe
erkeklerden gönüllü olduğu saptanmıştır. Sonuç ve
tartışma: Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinde depresyon,
anksiyete ve stres belirtileri yaygındır; sosyal ve
ekonomik sorunları olanlar, dış etkilerle tıbbı tercih
edenler ve dış görünümünden endişe edenlerde risk
fazladır. DASS-42 puanları iki cinsiyette benzer
olduğu halde erkekler psikolojik destek almakta
gönülsüzdür. Gelecekteki niteliksel çalışmalar ve
izlem çalışmaları daha kapsamlı bilgi verecektir.
