Abstract

Objective: As a society's health and power
depends on its nevvly grovving generations, in
today's vvorld child's worth has been gaining
increasing appreciation. Consequently, it has been
intended to examine the status and importance
given to child education in our country which is
considered to be in transition from traditionality to
modemization (Kağıtçıbaşı, 1983). This study
constitutes a preliminary study vvhich aims to
explore vvhether there are any common
representations or beliefs regarding child education
in Turkey. Method: Findings, obtained from
semi-structured intervievvs with twenty subjects
from a sample of mothers >and fathers, were
discussed in the frame of Moscovici's (1984)
theory of Social Representations. İn this respect,
social representations are described as common
themes (meaningful thematic units) referred by at
least half of the group of individual subjects while
responding to ythe öpen ended questions
(Hevvstone, 1985). Results: As the generafindings are considered, it is observed that child
education and personality formation is given
increasing importance among parents. Values of
Democratic Parenthood (Markus & Kiyama, 1991)
that are mostly associated with western cultures
are observed to be vvelcomed. Hovvever, one
should be cautious that in the present study only
common attitudes, knovvledge and beliefs are
examined; and yet parents behaviours in practice
are not regarded.

ANNE VE BABA GÖZÜYLE "ÇOCUK EĞİTİMİ" BİR SOSYAL TEMSİL ÖN ÇALIŞMASI

Abstract

Amaç: Bir toplumun sağlıklı ve sağlam olmasının
yeni yetişmekte olan nesillere bağlı olması
dolayısıyla, günümüz dünyasında çocuğun değeri
giderek daha fazla anlaşılmaktadır. Buna dayanarak,
edinilen bulgular, Moscovici'nin (1984) Sosyal
Temsiller Kuramı çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir.
Bu çerçevede, denek grubundaki bireylerin en az
yarısının kendiliğinden açık uçlu sorulara yanıt verirken
belirttikleri ortak temalar (anlamlı tematik
üniteler), "sosyal temsiller" olarak nitelendirilmiştir
(Hevvstone, 1985). Bulgular: Sonuçların genel değerlendirilmesine
bakıldığında, ebeveynler tarafından
çocuk eğitimine ve de kişilik oluşumuna giderek
artan bir önem verildiği görülülmüştür. Batı
kültürleri ile özleştirilen demokratik ebeveynlik
(Markus ve Kiyama, 1991) değerlerinin benimsenmekte
olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Ancak bu çalışmada
yalnızca ortak tutum, bilgi ve inanışların
incelendiği; ebeveynlerin pratikte nasıl davrandıklarının ise değerlendirilmediği göz ardı edilmemelidir.
