Seramik Yüzeyin Tuvale Dönüşümü: Betty Woodman’ın Yapıtlarında Resimsel Anlatım Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Seramik sanatı, tarih boyunca hem estetik hem de işlevsel kaygı ile biçimlenen üç boyutlu formlara dayalı geniş bir alanı sunmaktadır. Uzun yıllar boyunca seramik yüzey, formu tamamlayan ikincil bir unsur olarak görülse de, 20. yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren bu algı değişime uyramıştır. Bu dönem ile birlikte seramik yüzey dekoratif bir unsur olmanın ötesine geçerek, resimsel anlatımın ön plana çıktığı bağımsız bir ifade biçimine doğru değişmiştir. Bu değişimi en özgün biçimde yorumlayan sanatçılardan biri Betty Woodman’dır. Woodman, seramik ile resim arasındaki farkları birleştirerek her iki disiplini bir araya getiren özgün eserler üretmiştir. Sanatçı, seramik formu heykel ve resim sanatı ile harmanlayarak yüzeyi tuval gibi kullanmıştır. Seramik yüzeyin üzeri resim sanatında kullanılan renk, çizgi, doku gibi kavramları kullanarak iki boyu ile üç boyut arasındaki ayrımı ortadan kaldırmıştır. Bu da seramik ve resim sanatlarını bir arada kullanılabilirliğine olanak sağlamıştır. Çalışma “Seramik Yüzeyin Tuvale Dönüşümü” kavramı çerçevesinde Woodman’ın üretim sürecinin ele almaktadır. Ayrıca, resimsel anlatımın seramik sanatındaki işlevi, biçim- yüzey ilişkisi üzerinden değerlendirerek çağdaş seramikteki yerini tartışmaktadır.

The Transformation Of Ceramic Surface Into A Canvas: A Study On Pictorial Expression In Betty Woodman’s Artworks

Abstract

Ceramic art offers a broad scope based on three-dimensional forms shaped by both aesthetic and functional concerns throughout history. While for many years the ceramic surface was viewed as a secondary element complementing the form, this perception shifted from the mid-20th century onwards. During this period, the ceramic surface transcended decorative elements and evolved into an independent form of expression, where pictorial expression came to the fore. Betty Woodman is one of the artists who most uniquely interpreted this change. Woodman produced original works that combined the differences between ceramics and painting, bridging the gap between the two disciplines. Blending the ceramic form with sculpture and painting, the artist used the surface as a canvas. Using concepts such as color, line, and texture, she eliminated the distinction between two dimensions and three dimensions on the ceramic surface, enabling the interplay of ceramics and painting. This study examines Woodman's production process within the framework of the concept of "Transformation of the Ceramic Surface into Canvas." Furthermore, it discusses the role of pictorial expression in ceramic art through the relationship between form and surface, and its place in contemporary ceramics.
