Presentation of Oppositions of the “Abortion Ban” in News Photographs: A Visual Rhetoric and Semiotic Analysis

Abstract

: In this study, news photographs published in the press regarding the abortion ban, which came to the agenda in Turkey in 2012 and caused controversy for a long time, were evaluated from a visual, rhetorical and semiotic perspective. The news photographs included in the analysis consist of news photographs related to anti-abortion ban protests. The study is important because it is a study about an important sociological situation that has always been on the public agenda all over the world. Within the scope of the study, three newspapers were selected as a sample to represent the Turkish print media. "Purposive sampling" technique was preferred as the sampling technique. In this context, Cumhuriyet, Sözcü and Vatan newspapers were included in the analysis. The study aims to determine how opponents of abortion bans are presented in the press. Visual rhetoric and semiotic analysis methods were used in the study. In this context, news photographs obtained with the content scanning technique were analyzed. In the visual rhetorical and semiotic analysis, brief quantitative data supporting the study are also included. In this regard, it was determined that the newspaper that included the most news photographs regarding the opposition to the abortion ban was Sözcü newspaper.

Kürtaj Yasağı” Karşıtlarının Haber Fotoğraflarında Sunumu: Görsel Retorik ve Göstergebilimsel Bir Analiz

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de 2012 yılında gündeme gelen ve uzunca bir süre tartışmalara neden olan kürtaj yasağına ilişkin basında yayımlanan haber fotoğrafları görsel retoriksel ve göstergebilimsel açıdan değerlendirilmiştir. Analize dahil edilen haber fotoğrafları kürtaj yasağı karşıtı eylemlere ilişkin haber fotoğraflarından oluşmaktadır. Çalışma, tüm dünyada her dönemde kamuoyunun gündeminde yer alan önemli bir sosyolojik duruma yönelik bir çalışma olmasından dolayı önem taşımaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında Türk yazılı basınını temsilen örneklem olarak üç gazete seçilmiştir. Örneklem belirleme tekniği olarak “amaçlı örneklem” tekniği tercih edilmiştir. Bu kapsamda Cumhuriyet, Sözcü ve Vatan gazeteleri analize dahil edilmiştir. Çalışma, basında kürtaj yasağı karşıtlarının ne şekilde sunulduğunun tespit edilmesini amaç edinmiştir. Çalışmada görsel retorik ve göstergebilimsel analiz yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Bu kapsamda, içerik taraması tekniği ile elde edilen haber fotoğrafları analiz edilmiştir. Görsel retoriksel ve göstergebilimsel analizde, çalışmayı destekleyici kısa nicel verilere de yer verilmiştir. Bu doğrultuda, kürtaj yasağı karşıtlığına ilişkin en fazla haber fotoğrafına yer veren gazetenin Sözcü gazetesi olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
