Menenjit, beyindeki meninks adı verilen zarların iltihaplanması sonucunda oluşan nörolojik bir hastalıktır. Menenjite bakteriler, virüsler ve parazitler sebep olabilmektedir. Menenjite en sık neden olan etkenin virüsler olduğu bilinmektedir. Bakteriler menenjite daha az sebep olsa da, en riskli menenjit türü olarak bilinmektedir. Menenjit sonrası gelişen inflamasyon koklear aquadukt aracığıyla subaraknoid boşluktan kokleaya ulaşarak sensörinöral işitme kaybı ve işitme kaybına ek olarak vestibüler problemlere sebep olmaktadır. Menenjite bağlı işitme kaybı kalıcı veya geçici olabilmektedir. Burada önemli olan nokta, menenjitin erken teşhisi ve tedavisidir. Özellikle dil gelişiminde kritik dönemde olan çocuklar için yaşanabilecek olası bir işitme kaybı çocuğun; bilişsel, sosyal, psikolojik ve akademik gelişimi açısından kritik bir öneme sahiptir. Bu yazıda, menenjitin işitme ve denge sistemine olan etkisi ve tedavi sürecinde nasıl bir yol izlenebileceği literatürdeki bilgiler ışığında odyolojik açıdan değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.
