Comparison of Allele Frequencies of LAP3 and MC4R Gene Polymorphisms in Berrichon Du Cher, Ile De France, and Karacabey Merino Sheep

Abstract

Meat production yield and quality are common objectives for the Berrichon Du Cher (BDC), Ile De France (IDF), and Karacabey Merino (KM) sheep, which are bred for slaughter. Growth performance has a crucial role in these traits. LAP3 and MC4R genes are thought to influence growth and development in sheep by affecting embryonic cell functions, adult height, or body weights at different ages. The polymorphisms of the LAP3 and MC4R genes have been studied in cattle and razor clams, but only to a limited extent in in sheep breeds. Moreover, the novel SNP of target genes have not been studied in meat sheep such as BDC, IDF, and KM. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the allele and genotype frequencies of LAP3 and MC4R genes in BDC, IDF, and KM sheep. The BDC (n=48), IDF (n=58), KM(n=54) sheep were genotyped by PCR- RFLP method. Three different breeds of animals were compared for the LAP3 gene; differences between groups were assessed using chi-square test. According to the results, the genotype frequencies for g.232C>G of the LAP3 gene were calculated as 54.17% and 45.83% for GC and GG, respectively, in BDC. Similarly, the GC (57.41%) and GG (42.59%) genotypes were detected in KM. However, only one genotype (GG) was found in IDF for the LAP3 gene. Similarly, all investigated flocks were identified as GG in terms of the MC4R gene. As a consequence, these findings could be a source for further projects. Expanding the study by using different gene pools in terms of the investigated races should be useful for identifying the genetic structure of the flocks in detailed.
