Hypocalcemic Seizure in a African Grey Parrot

Abstract

In this case report; undetermined of the sex, three years old African grey parrot with seizure complaint referred to the our clinic was evaluated. According to obtained anamnesis the parrot had no health problem up to last three weeks. Since last three weeks, the parrot started to faint a few times a day and suddenly started to shout. In the clinical examination of the parrot; body temperature was 38.5oC, respiration rate was 40 and pulsation was 400 beat/minutes. Serum samples obtained from blood taken from veins under wings were analysed with concern to Calcium concentration which were found to be 1mmol/dl and thought that the fainting observed on the parrot most probably due to hypocalcemic crisis. As a result; with this case report it was aimed to remind that, when clinical symptoms such as fainting, convulsions seen in a parrot, hypocalcaemia should be taken into consideration.

Afrika Gri Papağanında Hipokalsemik Bayılma Olgusu

Abstract

Bu vaka bayılma şikayeti ile kliniğimize gelen cinsiyeti belirlenmemiş üç yaşlı bir Afrika Gri Papağanında değerlendirildi. Alınan anamnezde; papağanın son üç haftaya kadar herhangi bir sağlık probleminin olmadığı, son üç hafta içerisinde ise günde birkaç kez bayıldığı ve aniden bağırmaya başladığı bir müddet sonra tekrar eski haline geldiği belirtildi. Papağana yapılan genel klinik muayenede; vücut ısısının 38.4oC, solunum frekansının 40/dk, nabız frekansının 400/dk olduğu tespit edildi. Muayene esnasında konvülziyon ve kramplar şeklinde bayılma tablosu tarafımızdan gözlenmiş olup toplam 5 dakika sürmüştür. Bu kriz tablosu fotoğraflanmıştır. Kanat altı venasından alınan kandan elde edilen serum örneğinin biyokimyasal analizi sonucunda serum Ca++ düzeyinin 1mmol/dl olduğu (Referans: 2.0-3.2 mmol/dl) ve bayılmalarının hipokalsemik krize bağlı olarak şekillendiği kanısına varıldı. Papağanlarda bayılma ve konvülziyonla seyreden klinik belirtilerde hipokalseminin de dikkate alınması gerektiği bu vaka raporu ile belirlendi.
