Anti-Capitalist Mentality and Confirmation Bias

Abstract

This article examines how confirmation bias distorts reality perception, particularly when combined with closed ideologies. It argues that this cognitive shortcut is especially dangerous in the social sciences, where researchers’ ideological affiliations can compromise the scientific process and create “echo chambers.” To illustrate this, the article analyzes Anti-Capitalist Mentality’s approach to global economic data as a case study. The analysis demonstrates how this ideological framework often overlooks the market economy’s historical success in reducing absolute poverty, focusing instead on domestic inequalities to validate pre-existing premises. The study concludes by emphasizing that recognizing the interaction between confirmation bias and ideology highlights the critical importance of intellectual humility, openness, and methodological rigor in achieving accurate social scientific understanding.
