What Happens to Democracy? An Overview of the Debates on Populism and Authoritarianism

Abstract

Recently, debates on democracy and democratization have increased and turned to a different direction in the political science literature. The focus of the discussions is on the rise of populism in liberal democracies and the strength of populist politicians. In addition, there are many claims that many democratic governments are shifting towards authoritarianism. In this study, these claims are handled with a critical approach. Nowadays, in some Western countries, it is clear that many politicians use xenophobia and Islamophobia-based discourse. Parallel to this, there is a process in which political freedoms are restricted compared to the past. However, it is not correct to see this problem as the dilemma of liberal democracy. These anti-democratic approaches are closely related to the global economic and social crisis. It can be argued that liberal democracy would emerge even more robust from this crisis.
